Post image for {A Month of Sundays} Moonlight Through the Pines

There was a beautiful full moon this week which I attempted to photograph from our deck. I’d love to hear advice from photographers about how to get a really good shot of the moon.

Gosh, I’m glad I’m not the only one who noticed. Lately the sky has been gorgeous with incredibly bright stars and a moon like I’ve never seen before. There some magic up there right now.

It has been beautiful lately, hasn’t it? Maybe it’s the crisp, cold night air. Brrr….

I love your visual. Unfortunately, I can’t give you advice, I have a rather novice and one sided relationship with the camera. I’m hoping to create a deeper more meaningful relationship this year.

Thank you, Lael. I’m still struggling with photography and beginning to think I just don’t really have that inate talent that some people are born with. Not ready to give up yet, though!

I thought this perspective was breath-taking! I love the “swirly” look through the pine needles. Looks like they are moving in a circle! As for advice, ALWAYS use a tripod and ALWAYS use a remote for your shutter – especially with night shots. Those are not my words, but advice from instructors at the Texas Professional Photographers Association annual Texas School.

Thanks, Suzanne. I did actually use a tripod and a remote shutter release for this one. But, it’s the exposure and shutter speed that seem off to me. I’m gonna keep trying till I get it right!

I have no advice, Lana, just admiration. That’s a beautiful picture. I can almost smell the pine needles.

Suzanne, you don’t always need a tripod, just something that doesn’t move. My little camera doesn’t have a remote, so I do crazy things like put the camera on the hood of the car, and then put a stick or little rock under it so it’s angled the way I want it to be. Then I set the timer, and step back. Works like a charm!!

Lana, I can tell you left your shutter open a bit longer to get the pine needle details. One of the most awesome, accidental pictures I ever took was of fireworks. I had my old Ricoh camera (still used film) on a tripod, opened the shutter with my remote device, then started chatting. When I finally realized I was still holding the shutter trigger open, I just KNEW the picture was a mess. Instead, it turned out incredible. There were probably 20 different firework blasts, making it a very colorful, energetic picture.

lovely shot, like how you framed it into the opening of the pines… and I did not notice or know about the shutter – whatever works….

I have a simple point and shoot Cool Pix. I think you did a great job framing the moon. P-Dub would think so too!
