Giveaway – Meyer Lemon Tree from Brighter Blooms Nursery

Meyer Lemon Tree

Update: The winner of the Meyer lemon tree was comment #120, Sommer. I’ve already been in touch with Sommer and she is delighted to have won. Hope you enjoy the tree and we’re all looking forward to seeing the tasty treats you create with your own Meyer lemons!

Not long after I posted the recipe for the Meyer Lemon Chicken earlier this week, an email popped into my box from Travis at Brighter Blooms Nursery. He was asking if I’d be interested in hosting a giveaway for one of their lemon trees. Of course, I wasted no time replying to him that I’d be delighted to give a Meyer lemon tree to one of my readers! So, for all of you who commented on how you’d love to have a Meyer lemon of your own, here’s your chance!

Brighter Blooms Nursery is offering one 3-4 ft. Meyer lemon tree. Meyer lemons can be grown in pots in any part of the country and outdoors in Zones 8-11. If you haven’t seen them before, the Meyer lemon is a cross between a lemon and a mandarin orange. It has a slightly sweeter, but still very tart, taste than a regular lemon. In case you’re wondering, I live in Zone 7 and keep mine on the deck for the warmer months. We move it indoors in late Fall before the first cold temperatures. Meyer lemons are self-pollinating and are very heavy bearing trees. They bloom in the Spring and the fruit ripens during the winter. You’re going to love having your own fresh citrus during the cold winter months!

To enter the giveaway (technically a sweepstakes), simply leave a comment below telling me what recipe you’d make with your very own Meyer lemons. Entries will remain open through Friday, January 13, and a winner be selected on January 14. Open to residents of the continental U. S. only with the exceptions of California, Texas, Florida, Louisiana and Arizona. Sorry guys, but agricultural restrictions prevent shipping these plants into your states :-)

Good luck everyone! I can’t wait for one of you to get this beautiful little tree!

Note: I am in no way affiliated with Brighter Blooms Nursery and have received no compensation whatsoever for hosting this giveaway.

I can’t tell you HOW often I’ve had “Get a Meyer Lemon Tree” as part of my personal yearly goals. I pretty much bought out Whole Paychex’s supply this week because I’m making not only Limoncello over the weekend but love using Meyer Lemons in everything that I make (when they are available). I would probably use Meyer Lemons from this tree to make a Meyer Lemon Cherry Clafouti and a host of other yummy recipes :)

2 Amy January 6, 2012 at 11:30 am

Ooooh! I totally want one and have been reading about them for a few weeks but have been concerned that I’d kill it. Sounds easier than I thought though.

I’d make lots of goodies…ice cream for starters, and pound cake and lemon bars…

3 Maneesha January 6, 2012 at 11:34 am

I love Meyer Lemons. My favorite things is to infuse them into vodka. I also enjoy a meyer lemon salsa over grilled shrimp.

4 Janis January 6, 2012 at 11:35 am

I miss my meyer lemon tree so so much. I left it behind when I moved from California. I would make preserved lemons if I won.

5 Amanda January 6, 2012 at 11:39 am

Oh I’d make some maple meyer lemon lemonade :)

6 Christine January 6, 2012 at 11:46 am

I once started a Meyer lemon tree from a cutting and gave it away when I moved across the country. There are so many recipes that are sweetened and brightened by Meyer lemons. I would make Meyer lemon curd and turn that into a Meyer lemon galette.

7 Travis Cotton January 6, 2012 at 11:51 am

I would love to have one. Will this grow in SC though?

8 Lana January 6, 2012 at 12:52 pm

Follow the link in the post to read the growing requirements, Travis. They can be grown anywhere in the country in pots and with proper care.

9 Sterling Stokes January 6, 2012 at 11:55 am

I’d make either chicken piccata or maybe brew some beer with the lemons then make chicken piccata.

10 Kate @ Snowflake Kitchen January 6, 2012 at 12:02 pm

I’d make a bunch of things if I won, but mostly I would just stand there and smell the amazing meyer aroma.

11 Margaret January 6, 2012 at 12:04 pm

I’d go for some classic lemon bars. :-) I used to live with someone who had a huge lemon tree, but now that I’ve moved, I would love to have one of my own!

12 Paula- bell'alimento January 6, 2012 at 12:06 pm

15 Mike January 6, 2012 at 12:14 pm

I get several seed/plant catalog mailings and they have lemon trees for sale, but in the fine print it says “Prohibited for sale in Texas”, same with orange trees. (also to Florida, I think) Other states ban the sale of other fruits. I’m not sure if it’s to protect the groves/orchards or to protect the growers from even the tiniest bit of competition.

16 Lana January 6, 2012 at 1:02 pm

Mike – Yes, as I pointed out in the post, the trees cannot be shipped to California, Texas, Florida, Louisiana and Arizona. This is due to USDA regulations.

17 Mike January 6, 2012 at 1:21 pm

Sorry, I didn’t read the entire post – was just disappointed that I knew I wouldn’t be eligible.

18 Mike January 6, 2012 at 1:22 pm

I read what hit my reader, should add; it didn’t have the entire post.

Me. Me. PICK ME! Pretty please with a cherry on top?

OK, I know that pandering of that nature won’t work but I’m recalling the heady aroma of the box that a blogger friend sent me last year. I wanted to bottle it and capture that amazing scent forever. I guess with my own little tree I could right?

I would make…hmm, lemon lavender martinis with my own lemons and lavender. I would even send you some…oops, there I go again…but if bribery will work? What’s your address? :)

22 Deb Harris January 6, 2012 at 1:29 pm

37 Renee January 6, 2012 at 6:29 pm

I use lemon frequently and the idea of picking my own in cold New England is a dream. Favorite uses? When poaching fish or cooking en papillote; sometimes splurge on a mock holland aisle with mayo. Love grating zest into tuna salad, too.

38 Rhonda January 6, 2012 at 6:45 pm

I would love to have my very own Meyer Lemon Tree! I always have lemons in the house and watch for the first “meyers” to appear at the store, then I stock up! I love the way they taste and smell! I put them in my tea and water everyday. If I won I would make Lemon Chess Pie, Lemon Curd, Lemon Scones, the list goes on and on. Pick me !

I missed my chance years ago when we bought this old house and landscaped it with low maintenance evergreens, a few flowering trees and shrubs – BUT NO FRUIT TREES … shame on me, thank goodness my neighbors had the sense to plant satsumas, kumquats, lemon and limes .. and thank goodness they are many times generous..

43 Nutmeg Nanny January 6, 2012 at 9:36 pm

49 Katrina January 6, 2012 at 11:18 pm

I don’t think I’ve ever actually had Meyer lemons. I look for them in stores, but don’t find them around here. Everything I see made with them always looks so good though. I’d maybe start by making a sorbet or ice cream.

50 Teri January 7, 2012 at 12:37 am

chrisdeglen(at)gmail(dot)com

52 Bet January 7, 2012 at 6:02 am

I once saw a recipe for Meyer Lemon Marmalade that sounded delicious. The recipe said that you could not substitute regular lemons for the Meyers–I’d never heard of Meyer Lemons before that and wondered how they were different. Your post gives some great information about that. Thanks for explaining! I’d love to win a Meyer Lemon tree, and I’d definitely have to make some of that marmalade!!

53 Tien Douglas January 7, 2012 at 8:27 am

54 Renee - Kudos Kitchen January 7, 2012 at 8:48 am

I’m not quite sure what I’d made with the lemons if I won the Meyer lemon tree. Actually, come to think of it, I think I would give it to my mom who is moving back from Florida to Illinois to be with family while my dad battles cancer. I think I would remind them both of their wonderful 15 years they had enjoying the Florida sunshine and citrus.

55 Michelle Jaffee January 7, 2012 at 8:51 am

84 TT January 7, 2012 at 2:54 pm

I’d give the tree to my parents who love to make fresh ice lemonade

85 Jocelyn January 7, 2012 at 3:34 pm

Oh I’d love to be able to participate, but being in Canada I know that’s not possible, as no citrus of any kind can pass the US or Canadian border. Even if it was permitted, I’m sure the shipping restrictions and rules would turn into a nightmare!

I’ve been on the lookout for a Meyer lemon tree for ages. There’s one nursery in my area that has them for sale once in a blue moon, but I’m convinced they’re simply teasing us, by only bringing in 1 tree, as there’s never any available when I go to their garden goodies sale days.

Alas, I have to resorting to the “shhh, don’t tell my hubby how much”, very expensive 4 pac bag of meyer lemons from the produce market. I’m hoping I’ll find the elusive Meyer lemon tree when the spring garden goodies start to appear at the nursery. They should be there, I’ve put in enough requests!

86 Julie M. January 7, 2012 at 3:47 pm

I want one! Fresh squeezed lemonade, lemon cake and a lemon chicken are all on my list of must makes if I won this little beauty. Great giveaway!

garlic butter- fold them inside each other, tie them with string… Coat with a sugar glaze and roast… Then coat with more lemon butter after removing from the oven…definitely using a few sage leaves and lemon slices as garnish.

110 Mim January 8, 2012 at 10:48 am

Lemon bars

111 Rose January 8, 2012 at 2:06 pm

I’d actually use a cleaning recipe, with half lemon juice, half water.
I can use this in the kitchen to boost grease cutting, clean my floors, to keep the trash smelling clean, keep odors (from bacteria) out of the bathroom and nursery room.

But a dash of lemon with water is great daily. I love putting lemon on fish! As for a food recipe Lemon Garlic Shrimp. There’s so much you can do with lemons :D

112 Jessica January 8, 2012 at 3:09 pm

That’s funny … I was seriously just commenting at dinner last night that we really need a lemon tree!! Great timing!

I would have to start with a Lemon Thyme Cake, then an Angel Lemon Pie, Stuffed Grapeleaves, Lemon Chicken, Limoncello …

Oh, a lemon-curd-filled cake! Or lemon mousse, assuming I could get the poor tree to produce up here in Zone 3….

Oh My Goodness! I lost my Meyer Lemon Tree 2 years ago when North Florida really had a hard hard freeze. The first thing I would make is the recipe for Ruby Red Frost from the 1970 Southern Living “Best Recipes” book – it has cranberry juice; lemon juice; sugar; ginger ale and raspberry sherbet. My family and friends always ask for it and Meyer Lemons make it the BEST!!!

I found a yummy new recipe for iced lemon cookies that I’d love to try with fresh lemons from my own tree!! Please enter me too, thanks!
