  • Peaches: Choose peaches that are fully ripe. I select peaches by sight, smell, and feel. Look them over to make sure they don’t have any discolored spots. Smell them! They should smell like peaches. Also, ripe peaches will feel firm but give just slightly when gently pressed with a finger.
  • Sugar: I use both white granulated sugar and light brown sugar for extra depth of flavor, but you can use just white sugar if you like.
  • Cornstarch: A little cornstarch helps to thicken the filling.
  • Old Fashioned Oats: You want rolled oats like you’d use for your morning oatmeal.
  • Cinnamon and Nutmeg: The combination of spices is my preference, but you can use only cinnamon.
  • Butter: Holds the crumbly topping together and adds loads of rich flavor.

Troubleshooting Tips

  • Soggy Topping: If the topping isn’t as crunchy as you want, bake for a few more minutes or turn on the broiler for a minute or two. Watch very carefully to make sure it doesn’t burn.
  • Topping Too Brown: Cover the dish lightly with foil if the topping seems to be browning too quickly.

How I Serve Peach Crisp

My favorite way to serve any warm fruit crisp is with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of heavy cream. It’s also great with whipped cream and even a little bit of caramel sauce on top.

Questions About Easy Peach Crisp

Can I use canned peaches?

You can, but they will not taste the same. They’re good, yes, but they just don’t taste like fresh peaches. If using canned peaches, be sure to drain them well.

Can I freeze peach crisp?

You sure can. I think it’s best to freeze the made-up crisp before baking. When ready to eat, bake directly from the freezer, adding a few extra minutes to the baking time. Be aware that the topping will become wet from freezing and may not firm up like it would when baking immediately.

What’s the best way to peel peaches?

For me, blanching is the easiest method. Add peaches to a pot of boiling water for about 30 seconds, then immediately transfer them to an ice bath. The skins should slide off easily.
