Apple Pear Compote with Yogurt and Granola

5 from 3 votes

This delicious Apple-Pear Compote features two favorite autumn fruits. We enjoy it served over granola with a dollop of Greek yogurt as an alternative to our breakfast oatmeal. It’s also a lovely dessert on its own or flavored with a little brandy or rum and spooned over vanilla ice cream.

Everywhere I look lately, bloggers are posting their favorite oatmeal recipes. And rightly so. The leaves are changing, the temperatures are falling, and it’s quickly becoming the season for warm, comforting recipes.

I like a nice bowl of warm, spiced oatmeal on a cool morning, too. But, to be honest, I get tired of it pretty quickly. I enjoy a little something different once in a while.

This Pear and Apple Compote with Yogurt and Granola is a great alternative to our everyday oatmeal. It’s warm and deliciously comforting and just different enough not to be boring! A bowl of granola topped with a bit of Greek yogurt and fruit. My idea of a perfect autumn breakfast. Yum!

  • Cooking Apples — Cooking apples are those varieties that hold their shape better when cooked. Examples of cooking apple varieties are Jonagold, Honeycrisp, Winesap, Pink Lady, and Granny Smith.
  • Pears — I used red Bartlett pears in this recipe, but almost any variety of pear is fine.
  • Sugar — Use your choice of white granulated sugar, cane sugar, or light brown sugar. Brown sugar will add a slight caramelized taste.
  • Raisins — Choose either dark raisins or golden raisins, or substitute currants if you like.
  • Granola — Use your favorite purchased granola from the grocery’s cereal aisle, or make your own with my Homemade Granola recipe.
  • Greek Yogurt — I enjoy a vanilla-flavored yogurt for this recipe, but plain is just as good.

How to Make Apple-Pear Compote with Yogurt and Granola

Two side-by-side images show a wooden cutting board with chopped pieces of apple on the left and chopped pieces of pear on the right. A knife rests next to the peeled pear pieces.
STEP 1.
A stainless steel pot containing chopped apples and pears, granulated sugar, and a whole cinnamon stick, ready for cooking.
STEP 2.
A hand pours raisins from a small bowl into a pot containing chopped apples and pears, with a wooden spoon resting inside the pot.
STEP 3.
  1. Peel and core the apples and pears, and cut them into similar-sized chunks. Place the fruit, along with the sugar, cinnamon, and water, in a heavy-bottomed saucepan.
  2. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer and cook for 15-20 minutes, or until the pears and apples are tender. The cooking time is up to you. If you like your fruit a bit softer, cook it longer. Stir frequently during the cooking time.
  3. About halfway through cooking, stir in the raisins.
  4. Divide the granola among 4 bowls and top each with two tablespoons Greek yogurt and 1/4 of the pear-apple compote. Drizzle the milk or cream around the edges of the bowl. Dust the top with a bit of ground cinnamon if you like. Serve warm.
  • Serve the compote warm over a slice of pound cake with a dollop of whipped cream.
  • If serving for dessert, add two tablespoons rum or brandy to the compote near the end of cooking.
  • Layer apple-pear compote with vanilla custard.
  • Cook the compote until the fruit has broken down further and serve as a pancake topping.
  • Serve over warm French toast.
  • Substitute your favorite fruits. Peaches, apricots, nectarines, plums, and cherries all make delicious compotes.
  • Serve as a side dish with chicken or pork.

Why is it called “compote”?

The word compote is a French word for mixture. Compote is the culinary term for chunky pieces of fruit that have been stewed in a sugary syrup.

Can I make this in advance?

You can easily make this compote in advance. Store the finished recipe tightly covered in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Reheat over low heat or in the microwave.

My compote is runny. What can I do?

If your compote is too runny, you can add a tablespoon of cornstarch dissolved in a little water. The cornstarch slurry should be stirred into the hot fruit mixture and cooked for 1 minute.
